Fine gardening in Charlestown is a logistics problem solved well, and only then a horticultural one. Most of the gardens we look after sit behind brick row houses on the slope below Monument Square, and reaching them means going through the house. Our crews work in clean shoes, move tools and cuttings in covered carriers rather than wheelbarrows, and take green waste away the same day, so a hallway is never left dirty overnight.
Once inside, the garden is small, enclosed and unforgiving. A courtyard of a few hundred square feet has nowhere to hide a badly pruned shrub or a tired container, so visits are frequent and detailed rather than large and fast. Each visit covers pruning to structure, deadheading, edging against brick and granite, feeding, replacing anything that has sulked, and checking irrigation and lighting while we are there. Light is patchy: shade from neighbouring buildings in spring, reflected heat off a south-facing wall in July. We manage the planting zone by zone, not to a single rule.
The slope matters as well. Water moves downhill through Charlestown. A courtyard at the low end of a run of houses collects it, while raised beds and planters at the top dry out quickly. We set mulching and watering by a bed’s position, not by the calendar.
Then there is the harbour. Winter wind carries salt across the peninsula, so December work here means protecting evergreens and exposed containers, and March work begins with rinsing residue from foliage before any cutting back. Roof decks and street-side boxes take the worst of it and are inspected more often than the sheltered courtyards.
The result is a garden that looks maintained on any given day, not only after a visit. We keep a written record of each property: what is planted where, what was approved for the street side, what struggled last year and what replaced it. That record is what lets a new season begin without starting from scratch.
Maintenance is often where a relationship starts, but Charlestown properties usually need more than upkeep over time. Our garden design and installation work covers courtyards being rebuilt or replanted, and containers and window boxes are designed with the review process in mind. Roof deck and terrace planting is built for exposure and weight limits, and drip irrigation keeps small courtyards and containers watered without hoses through the house. Low-voltage landscape lighting is planned so that nothing spills visibly onto the street. Every service is listed on our Charlestown garden services page.
If you own or manage property beyond Charlestown, the same service is available in the North End and Downtown Boston, and our Boston garden maintenance page covers the wider area.
We are based at 5 Crescent St, in Charlestown itself, 0.0 miles from your door, so a visit from us is not a trip across the city.

What happens next: we book a site visit at a time that suits you, walk the garden, including how we would reach it, and note what is approved on the street side. Within business days you receive a written proposal with scope, visit schedule and fee. If you approve it, we agree a start date and access arrangements, and the first visit is scheduled.
