Most Charlestown properties we work with fall into one of two footprints: a federal-era or Greek Revival row house with a brick or granite stoop facing Monument Square, Winthrop Street, or one of the streets off Main, and a rear yard reached only through the house or a shared gangway barely three feet wide. Containers are often the only planting option that exists at all — there is no bed to dig, only a stoop, a fire escape landing, or a paved rear yard bounded by a neighbor’s fence on three sides.
Light runs to extremes on the slope. A south-facing stoop on Bunker Hill Street gets full sun off the brick from late morning through late afternoon and heats up faster than the air temperature suggests; a rear courtyard behind a three-and-a-half-story house two doors down can sit in near-total shade from May through September. We plant to the actual exposure of each spot rather than a neighborhood average, which on a single block can mean full-sun combinations on the street side and shade-tolerant texture — heuchera, Japanese forest grass, fern — in back.
Wind and salt are a real factor within a few blocks of the Navy Yard and the water side of the peninsula, less so up toward the Training Field. Where it matters, we choose plant material bred to take salt spray and drying wind rather than fighting the site with something delicate that will show stress by July.
Anything visible from the public way in the Charlestown Historic District — window boxes, urns, stoop planters — falls under Historic District Commission review for material and, in some cases, color. We design within what the commission has already approved on the same block wherever possible, which is almost always faster than starting an application from a blank page.
Container planting is one piece of a broader program we run for Charlestown clients. Many of the same row-house properties also need garden design and installation for the courtyard itself, or an ongoing fine gardening and maintenance program to keep beds and containers on the same schedule. Where the container is a fitted piece rather than a freestanding pot, we handle it as window box planting on its own review track. For properties with a roof deck over the Navy Yard or the harbor, we do roof deck and terrace planting, usually paired with drip irrigation installation so containers up three or four flights do not depend on hand watering, and low-voltage landscape lighting for evening use.
Seasonal turnover extends into spring garden cleanup and fall garden cleanup ahead of each planting rotation. For the rare Charlestown property with a real bed rather than only container space, we design perennial borders and urn and planter arrangements as a set. On properties under active commission scrutiny, we also offer historic garden restoration, courtyard garden design, and a standalone garden consultation for owners who want a plan before committing to installation. The full list of what we do in the neighborhood is on our Charlestown garden services page, and container planting for the rest of the city is covered on our Boston seasonal container planting page.
We plant the same service just across the water and downtown, for owners comparing notes across neighborhoods: seasonal container planting in the North End and seasonal container planting in Downtown Boston.
Rouvalis Gardens is based at 5 Crescent St in Charlestown — 0.0 miles from the row houses, stoops, and courtyards on the Bunker Hill slope. Call (617) 555-1234 or request a consultation, and we will walk the property, note the exposure and access, and flag anything that needs Historic District Commission approval before proposing a plan. Most Charlestown consultations can be scheduled within the week.
