Frequently Asked Questions About Fine Gardening
What makes fine gardening different from basic lawn care?
Fine gardening focuses on the art and science of creating beautiful, healthy ornamental plantings. This includes perennial borders, shrubs, trees, and seasonal displays rather than just mowing and edging lawns. The work requires horticultural knowledge, design sensibility, and detailed hand work that goes far beyond maintenance equipment operation.
How often do gardens need professional maintenance?
Visit frequency depends on your garden’s complexity and your aesthetic standards. Most formal gardens benefit from weekly attention during the growing season (April through October) with bi-weekly or monthly visits in winter. Container gardens often need more frequent care due to their irrigation and deadheading requirements.
Can you work within historic district guidelines?
Absolutely. We regularly work on properties within Beacon Hill’s historic district and understand the approval processes for garden changes visible from public ways. We can help you navigate these requirements while creating the fine gardening Beacon Hill, MA you want.
What plants work best in shady gardens?
Many excellent choices thrive in shade, including hostas, ferns, astilbes, hellebores, Japanese forest grass, heuchera, and various hydrangeas. The key is matching plants not just to light levels but also to moisture conditions and your maintenance preferences.
Do you handle snow removal or winter services?
Our focus remains on ornamental gardening rather than snow removal. However, we do provide winter services including protective wrapping for vulnerable shrubs, pruning storm-damaged branches, and ensuring drainage systems function properly to prevent ice damage.
How do you handle pest and disease problems?
We use integrated pest management, starting with cultural controls (proper watering, good air circulation, appropriate plant selection) and moving to organic treatments when necessary. Many problems can be avoided entirely through proper plant health management.
What's involved in a garden consultation?
We visit your property to assess existing conditions, discuss your goals and preferences, evaluate sun exposure and soil quality, and provide recommendations. Consultations typically last 45-60 minutes and result in a clear plan for moving forward with design or maintenance services.
Can you maintain gardens year-round?
Yes. While the growing season receives the most attention, winter work includes pruning, garden structure assessment, planning for spring installations, and protecting plants from winter damage. Year-round service ensures your garden remains healthy and beautiful through every season.
How do you price fine gardening services?
Pricing depends on your garden’s size, the services required, and visit frequency. We offer both project-based pricing for installations and restoration work, and seasonal maintenance agreements for ongoing care. After assessing your property, we provide detailed proposals that clearly outline services and costs.
What happens if plants don't thrive in my garden?
We select plants carefully based on your site conditions, but occasionally relocations or replacements prove necessary. Our maintenance programs include monitoring plant performance and making adjustments to ensure your garden succeeds long-term. We stand behind our plant selections and workmanship.
